Natural History


 

Natural History is not a group but has arisen from a short course in 2011 entailing walks on the Sefton coastal Nature reserves and from some of the trips with the Geology Group.


A series of natural history walks were organised by Annie Hazlehurst on the Ainsdale and Birkdale nature reserves in spring and summer 2011

The following plants were found on the Geology trips in the summer of 2011
fern thistle
A fern growing in a limestone gryke on the Geology trip to the Great Orme in July 2011 A carline thistle (Carlina vulgaris), which flowers from July-Sept on limestone grassland, at the Great Orme in July 2011
gentian ragwort
An autumn gentian (Gentianella amarella) found on the Great Orme in July 2011. It flowers late July-early October on limestone grassland and dunes. Uncommon but not rare. Marsh ragwort (Senecio aquaticus) at Wrens Nest Nature Reserve in Dudley in August 2011
