Keyboard Music

The group meets on the 1st and 3rd Mondays from 140.0-16.00.

The first half hour is spent socialising, having coffee and putting up our keyboards then for the next half hour three of our members will give a recital of music of their choice, our tutor will explain some new music or a little theory for half an hour when we then don our headphones and practice today's lesson or practice what we have been playing at home.

We have music sheets available but we bring our own Keyboards. Our tutor attends to each of us individually to help as needed as playing ability varies amongst the group, in addition there is camaraderie and much support from colleagues.

Doreen Sheard

We are fortunate to have a successful retired music teacher to guide us by teaching theory and key board skills at each meeting.

Doreen Sheard published music manuals in her earlier career and in 1977 became secretary and a leading light in the newly formed Southport and Crosby Hammond Organ Society founded by David Rushworth.

During the seventies and eighties she played and gave workshops at holiday clubs around the country. She has a novel and successful technique to assist children to learn musical symbols by encouraging them to draw a cat and then likening its body features to musical signs.

One of her pupils was Paul Roberts (featured in The Champion in June 2007) who came to Southport to give a concert and met up with Doreen again. Twenty five years ago she encouraged him to give his first performance and since then he has completed a world concert tour and is a regular broadcaster and recording artiste.

In 1987 Doreen helped to set up the Southport Organ and Keyboard Club, a thriving organisation that has attracted several of the U3A Keyboard Group to join. Following her retirement, Doreen moved to Ormskirk, joined U3A and offered assistance with the Keyboard Group, for which we are all most grateful.
