Bird Watching

birdwatchingThe birdwatching group has both indoor meetings and outdoor outings. Each outing will have a leader. Warm clothing is advised but knowledge of birds is not necessary! If you are new to this Group please phone Eric or Viv before attending an outing.

Additional details for meeting places and how to get there are included on this page before the date of the outing.

Wednesday 19 November. Meet at RSPB Ribble Discovery Centre, Fairhaven Lake, Lytham St Annes at 12.45. We will be given a guided tour of Ribble Estuary Birds

Come well fed and well provisioned. Car sharing from Aughton will be at 1100 to allow time for us to eat our sandwiches at Fairhaven.

If travelling independently it is recommended that you travel North towards Preston by the A59 through Penwortham. On the bridge over the Ribble keep in the left hand lane to join the link road to the A583 towards Blackpool. After 3-4 miles take the left hand turn along the A584 to Lytham. Keep on this road through Lytham for Fairhaven Lake.

Refer to the two maps for further details

Fairhaven Lake

Ribble Discovery Centre

Car Parking is usually possible along the Inner Promenade, but there is a pay car park by the side of the lake with entry from the Inner Promenade near the Toilets.

Please be at the Ribble Discovery Centre by 12:45.

If you travel via M6/M55 then it is recommended that you leave the M55 at Junction 3: the roadsto Lytham St Anne's from Junction 4 are poorly signposted.

There will be no outing in December.

From January 2009 could people who need a lift please phone Eric or Viv. So few people used the old arrangement that the practise of waiting at Aughton Village Hall in case someone needs a lift will be discontinued.

Wednesday 21 January 2009: Marsh Side/Hesketh Out Marsh. Meet at 1000 at Marsh Side Car Park. After a visit to the main hide we travel North for a visit to the new site being developed at Hesketh Out Marsh. We can walk on the public right of way along the embankment. Since the embankment is at least a 30 minute walk from the nearest place were we can park be prepared by bringing refrehments, wrapping up tight and wearing boots.

Previous Outing to Woolston Eyes Bird Reserve

Woolston-EyesThe meeting in April 2007 was at the Woolston Eyes Bird Reserve where a variety of waterbirds was seen including Black Necked Grebe. This reserve has been featured on BBC TV.

Woolston Eyes is a superb wetland habitat which lies next to the Manchester Ship Canal and is virtually right underneath the M6 motorway.

Known locally as 'The Eyes', the area comprises a small series of islands and reed beds that have become a man-made haven for wildlife. black necked grebe
