TOURS FOR 2012: IMPORTANT NOTICE
Future tours will no longer have Frank Milner with us as our guide. John Makinson of Discovery Travel, will work closely with Frank on the itinery and intends, where possible, to use local guides, particularly those with expertise in art education.
Frank, over the past four and a half years, has planned and guided us on five trips to Italy and four in Britain, which is quite a substantial tally. Like many of us, he now feels the years beginning to tell and he feels he must give up doing large group tours, especially as the scope of ours have now broadened to include venues that he does not know well and so the work of preparation, planning and prior visits has become greater. He writes that it has been a source of great pleasure over the years to act as guide for the Aughton and Ormskirk U3A and we know that members have greatly appreciated his expertise and enthusiasm. He will continue to conduct short art tours, not exclusively for U3A, to cities such as Florence and Venice and members can receive details of these through Discovery Travel.
The group co-ordinators, Joyce and Owen, and John are committed to making the tours for 2012 and future tours successful, informative and enjoyable and will meet in the near future to contine the planning. We intend to keep the tours exclusively, as far as possible, for the Aughton and Ormskirk U3A. It would therefore be very heplful if interested members would contact Discovery Travel 01704 509343 to be sure of receiving early information and access to priority booking.
The organisation of our visits and tours is necessarily having to change because, in addition to Frank's retirement from leading large group tours, in the present economic situation, we no longer have the valuable free services of museum/gallery guides. We are working hard, enthusiastically and optimistically to discover new ways to take the group forward. We will continue to provide experiences of sharing visits to see original works of art, use the services of experts when we can (and when the charges are manageable) and intend to use more of our own expertise. We see it as a phase of new opportunities and, as always, we welcome your feedback.
